“I never microwave anything in a plastic container.  Pthalates and bisphenol A (BPA), which can lech into food when plastics are heated, mimics hormones and may increase the risk of certain cancers, including breast and ovarian.  Use a microwave safe ceramic or glass bowel instead.   …Jeffrey Morrison, M.D, founder of The Morrison Center on how he protects himself from cancer risks.

Q: I got an e-mail that lipsticks contain lead and can cause cancer. Should I be concerned?

A: An FDA analysis of 10 different lipstick brands did detect very low levels of lead (0.09 to 3.06 parts per million), but the amount is minimal, compared with other common sources, says LuAnn E. White, PhD, a toxicologist and professor of environmental health at the Tulane School of Public Health. The permissible level for paint is 90 ppm, for example. While the FDA doesn’t regulate lead in cosmetics, the Canadian government is trying to. Their proposed standard for maximum safe levels: 10 ppm.

Bottled water is not evil.  Sure, it’s gotten a bad rap in the past few years…everything from plastic bottles taking over our landfills to causing cancer.  In theory, those things are true, and yes, bottled water can be frowned upon in that regard.

Here’s the upside…keep bottled water out of extremely high temperatures, for instance, your car.  Some scientist believe that the plastic can omit toxins into the water when the bottles are extremely hot, thus, perhaps, being the cause of breast cancer.  Simply keep your bottles out of the heat and the plastic is otherwise harmless.

About the landfills…Our landfills are being polluted with millions of water bottles.  Since the bottles take an estimated 600-1000 years to decompose, it’s an absolutely horrible idea to throw the bottles into the trash.  Sadly, only 10% of plastic water bottles are recycled in the US.  That means a whopping 90% are going straight to the landfills.  It’s so easy to recycle.  If you don’t…you should start.

At the end of the day, bottled water is not evil.  It can be an evil if you aren’t properly disposing of the bottles and you are letting them sit in a car all day omitting toxins into the water.   As long as you follow the rules, bottled water can be a very, very good thing.

Go VOC-Free
Posted on May 15th, 2009 at 2:57 PM by Supernatural Botanicals

painting-couple.jpg   Indoor air is three times more polluted than outdoor air, and according to the EPA, is considered one of the top five hazards to human health.  Paints and finishes are thought to be among the leading causes.

Paints and finishes release low level toxic emissions into the air for years after application.  The source of these toxic emissions are from volatile organic compunds (VOCs).

VOCs have been known to cause mouth and nose irritation, headaches, loss of concentration, nausea, and damage to liver, kidneys and central nervous system.  Even cancers.

Luckily, paint makers have rose to the challenge and are now producing paints that are VOC-free.  The next tine your purchase paint, make sure you are purchasing VOC-free paints for the health of your family.
