Take your green efforts one step further and incorporate it into your laundry room.  Did you know that washing your clothes in cold water will give you the same end result as hot water?….clean clothes.  However, you’ll save tons of cash on your electric bill.  It takes so much energy to heat all the water in your hot water tank.  Why pay for something that you don’t need to?  Switch to a cold water detergent and start washing your clothes in cold water.   Do some multitasking by saving money,  being kind to the environment, and conversing, simply by switching to cold water when you do laundry.

  • Set your thermostat a few degrees lower in the winter and a few degrees higher in the summer to save on heating and cooling costs.
  • Install compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) when your older incandescent bulbs burn out.
  • Unplug appliances when you’re not using them. Or, use a “smart” power strip that senses when appliances are off and cuts “phantom” or “vampire” energy use.
  • Wash clothes in cold water whenever possible. As much as 85 percent of the energy used to machine-wash clothes goes to heating the water.
  • Use a drying rack or clothesline to save the energy otherwise used during machine drying.

Stock Up On Sleep
Posted on January 25th, 2011 at 8:40 AM by Supernatural Botanicals

If you’re anything like the rest of the working class in America, chances are, you are starved for sleep.  Dropping into bed at 11:30 p.m, only to wake again at 5 a.m. is robbing you of much needed mental functioning.  But, there’s good news.  If you aren’t getting enough sleep Monday through Friday, sleeping in late on Saturday or Sunday can undo the damage.  According to a UPenn study, a full 10 hours of rest one night a week can boost energy and increase your mood.

Eco Responsibility

Light bulbs account for 25% of all the electricity we use; 75% of that could be saved by switching from incandescent bulbs to CFLs.  Many local electric companies are even offering free CFLs simply for the asking (so call them and ask them.)  It’s everyone’s responsibility to be eco-responsible, so pick up the ball and get in the game.  It’s the right thing to do.

Your body benefits greatly just by the simple act of deep breathing.  A slow, controlled breath will not only soothe the central nervous system to make  you more relaxed, but also helps your body in these ways:

  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Relaxes muscles
  • Helps weight loss
  • Increases energy
  • Calms the mind
  • Aids sleep
  • Fights wrinkles
  • Slows heart rate
  • Aids in digestion
  • Boosts the lymphatic system (which carries toxins away from the cells)

Recycling one glass bottle saves enough energy to light a 100-watt bulb for four hours.  One glass bottle.  Think of the possibilities of that.  That’s amazing.  Think about what you can do…and do it!  Recycling requires virtually zero effort, but has such a huge impact.  You can recycle, starting today.   You can make a difference.  Starting right now, you can make a difference.  I always say, responsibility builds character.  Not to mention, being eco-cognizant is totally hot!

Eco-America

The average American consumes five times more energy than the average global citizen or 10 times more than the typical Chinese.

If the typical Chinese consumer used as much oil as the average American uses, China would require 90 million barrels per day—11 million more than the entire world produced each day in 2001.

Did you know that plasma-screen high-definition TVs can use nearly twice as much energy as their LCD screen counterparts, and more than three times as much as the standard models?  TVs account for 4 percent of our energy use nationally.  With plasma screens, that could reach 8 percent or more before the decade is out.
