Because your entire body makes contact with your yoga mat, it’s something you’ll want to keep very, very clean.  And because your yoga mat makes contact with the floor, especially the gym floor (eck!), you’ll want to be extra vigilant in keeping your yoga mat clean.

You can avoid germs and dirt by folding your yoga mat in half before you roll it up after a workout.  That way, you’ll avoid getting “yuck” on the side you pose on.  Remember, your face comes in contact with the mat in Chaturanga pose and in pigeon pose….think about that the next time you lay your mat down on the floor.   A simple Clorox wipe to the entire mat will also keep your yoga mat clean and germ-free.   Let the mat dry completely before rolling it up after cleaning.

Out With Old Makeup

In the Cold and Flu season, you should replace your mascara and lipstick once a month to avoid germs that can take you, and your immune system, down for the count.  Head germs off at the pass and avoid getting sick by having good makeup hygiene.  If anything (at all) has been in your makeup bag longer than three months, toss it.  Wash makeup brushes with shampoo and conditioner and let air dry to keep all makeup tools clean and free of germs.

Did you know that germs can last on paper money for 17 days?  Carry hand sanitizer with you in your purse and your car …and use it regularly.  Wash your hands with soap as often as possible to avoid getting sick.  girly skull

Don’t Get Sick

sick-in-bed.jpg   There’s nothing worse than being down-for-the-count with a cold or the flu.   Not only does it feel like you were ran over by a Mack truck, but it also throws your entire routine off for days.  If you are sick, truly give your body a few days off from the gym.  I can tell you from personal experience…I have pushed too hard when I’m sick and always end up regretting it.  Just don’t do it.  Avoid it.

And avoid a cold all together by avoiding germs.  That’s how colds start.  Here are the worse offenders:

Keyboard:  719 germs per square inch.

Mouse Pad:  846 germs per square inch.

Handbag:  (who knew?!)  882 germs per square inch.  (think twice before sitting your purse on the floor in a restaurant or worse, the ladies room.)

Desktop:  1270 germs per square inch.

Phone:  2180 germs per square inch.

Chair:  67,700 per square inch.

Use a great natural disinfectant and clean those surfaces regularly to stay healthier.
