If you have lots of wood surfaces in your home, you know that the costs of furniture polish has skyrocketed.  And when prices start to soar sky high, so does our creativity.  How can we do it cheaper, better, and to boot….all naturally?  While there are numerous “green” recipes for homemade furniture polish, they all have the two basic ingredients…oil and lemon.  And as luck would have it, it’s all you need.

To make homemade furniture polish, simply whisk together olive oil with an equal amount of lemon juice (you can also use vinegar, but lemons smell so much nicer).  Simply leave it in the bowl you mixed it in and dip a rag in, or put the liquid mixture in a spray bottle.   The bowl method is easier and less wasteful, as you can mix only the amount you’ll need for the days’ chores.

Use a dry rag, dip the rag into the oil mixture, and buff down all your wood surfaces.  It brings the wood back to life in an instant, and makes it appear brand new.  All natural, less expensive, and oh-so-crafty!    We love this!

Get rid of those Christmas trees responsibly this year….recycle them.  Why recycle?  Christmas trees take up tons of space in landfills, and the decay of the trees are painfully slow due to the lack of oxygen.  Instead, the trees can be ground into wood chips or made into useful compost.

Check with your city’s online website to find if your township is holding a Christmas Tree Recycling day…and most cities do.  You can also check out Earth911 for additional resources to get rid of that tree responsibly.

Start the year off  Green and do the right thing.  Recycle!

With the surge of catalogs and Christmas cards we all receive in December, be mindful to recycle.  Be especially cognizant of your landfill contributions this month by recycling all magazines and catalogs, recycling envelopes from the Christmas cards, and ultimately recycling the cards after Christmas.  If the card is especially beautiful, buy a great frame, put the card in it,  and put it on a bookshelf, desk, or entry table.  That’s recycling too, you know.  Have a Green Christmas this year!

For every 38,000 bills paid online, 5,058 pounds of greenhouse gases are avoided and two tons of trees are preserved, according to NACHA — The Electronic Payments Association, a non-profit. Using direct payment also saves a person about $150 annually in stamp and check costs and late fees, NACHA estimates.

Have your employer pay you through direct deposit to further cut back your paper trail.  If you feel you absolutely must continue to get paper billing, make sure and recycle the paper.  Very simple steps make a huge impact on the environment.  Step up to the plate and do your part.
