Avoiding just 10 miles of driving every week would eliminate about 500 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions a year!

  • Set your thermostat a few degrees lower in the winter and a few degrees higher in the summer to save on heating and cooling costs.
  • Install compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) when your older incandescent bulbs burn out.
  • Unplug appliances when you’re not using them. Or, use a “smart” power strip that senses when appliances are off and cuts “phantom” or “vampire” energy use.
  • Wash clothes in cold water whenever possible. As much as 85 percent of the energy used to machine-wash clothes goes to heating the water.
  • Use a drying rack or clothesline to save the energy otherwise used during machine drying.

  • It takes 90% less energy to recycle aluminum cans than to make new ones.
  • The garbage in a landfill stays for a for about 30 years. In 1995 over 200 of the world’s landfills were full.
  • Each person throws away approximately four pounds of garbage every day. If we are cognizant, we can reduce that…a lot!
  • Most lighters are made out of plastic and filled with butane fuel, both petroleum products. Over 1.5 billion end up in landfills each year.
  • Going Green” doesn’t have to be a daunting task that means sweeping life changes. Start by planting a tree in your backyard.
  • Lighting an empty office wastes enough energy to boil water for a 1000 cups of coffee and doubles a company’s annual electric bill.
  • Adjust your thermostat 1 degree higher in the summer and 1 degree cooler in the winter. Each degree less will save about 10% on energy use.
  • Nearly 90% of plastic water bottles are not recycled, instead taking thousands of years to decompose. Why? It’s so very easy to recycle.
  • Recycling just the Sunday papers would save more than half a million trees every week.
  • A single quart of motor oil, if disposed of improperly, can contaminate up to 2,000,000 gallons of fresh water.
  • A laptop is more environment friendly than a desktop. It consumes five times less electricity.
  • A plant on your desk acts as a natural filter, absorbing airborne pollutants and computer radiation while replenishing oxygen levels.
  • An aluminum can that is thrown away will still be a can 500 years from now! It’s so easy to recycle. Please do!
  • Everytime we burn oil, coal and gas to generate electricity and power, we produce the heat trapping gases that cause global warming.
  • Average number of pounds of paper used annually by every American: 680
  • Number of gallons of water wasted by a leaky faucet dripping once per second: 2,700
  • Eco Facts: Number of trees required by every American to meet their yearly demand for paper and wood products: 7

treehugger.jpg   It’s no surprise that we’re all about the Green.  Supernatural Botanicals is proud to be a pioneer company utilizing a Green approach to skincare.  Our Green principals go far beyond all-natural and eco-friendly skincare products.  We also exercise a Green approach in our lab as well, from recycling, printing, using cleaning products that are not harmful to our environment, proper lighting, weather-proofing, packaging, etc.

Being Green means being cognizant, being in the moment, being accountable, and being responsible.  Pick one simple thing, such as using compact fluorescent light bulbs (sold everywhere), to start your own personal Green journey.

It’s only a matter of time before the planet punks us (for lack of a better word) into being more eco-friendly.  So lets beat it to the punch and show the planet that we are appreciative and worthy of it.

So I’ve decided to have a neighborhood holiday block party at my house this year.  I’m not sure my neighbors are overtly eco-friendly, so I’m thinking a little green exposure won’t hurt them.   When you know better, you do better, right?  So my plan is to inadvertently expose them to an eco-friendly party and show them how fantastic going green can be.  Want to green up your holiday?  Incorporate a few of these suggestions into your party

square-one-rz.jpg  How cool is this?  Organic Vodka for your holiday party.  How absolutely fabulous can that be?  Square One Vodka is eco-chic, and is the first 100% organic American Rye Vodka.  Also a perfect hostess gift for a green-ling.

veggie.jpg   Keep it organic with your appetizers.   What could be better than a bounty of organic vegetables? ….a bounty of organic veggies with a big bowl of organic Ranch dressing, that’s what could be better!

sexy-lighting.jpg   This is a really important step to a great party…ambiance!   It’s often overlooked which is sad, because it’s absolutely key in the overall feeling of the party.  Throw those light switches on dimmers, and set the mood.  You’ll be creating the right ambiance while saving on your lighting bill.   Who knew green could be so sexy?

soy-candles.jpg  So you’ve dimmed the lights, now lets make it glow!  Soy candles are beautiful, and you’ll be sure to get compliments.  Perfect platform for green-telling stories.  Candles give perfect ambiance to the room and help you to turn the electricity down.  Another perfect green-ling hostess gift.

supernatural-botanicals-body-butters.jpg   Gifts to the guests.   It’s always nice sending your friends out the door with a token of your appreciation.  Supernatural Botanicals All-Natural Body Butters will be a perfect eco-friendly parting gift to my guests.   Both women and men love these butters and they smell simply sensational!  Other considerations are bags of organic granola (you can find great bags for these at craft stores everywhere.)

The idea is to shift the focus to greener living.  It’s a great holiday theme, a great conversation starter, and guilt-free partying!

Here are five great selections to give to yourself, or a friend this holiday season.  Everyone loves a great read, and more so, everyone starts to think about ways to improve their life this time of year (think New Year’s resolutions!)  Here are a few of my favorites.   Extra points if you can turn someone on to the love of reading.  One of these great books will get a non-book-reader headed in the right direction.

quiet-mind.jpg   Quiet Mind by David Kundtz.   More than a meditation book, Quiet Mind is a series of reflections that can illuminate every aspect of life. It offers readers guidance on using the moments between activities, which the author calls “stillpoints”.  As opportunities to focus on becoming more fully awake to who they are. “These times are the ‘spaces in between’ the events of your life,” writes Kundtz, “spaces often lost, or worse, filled with anxiety. And these spaces in between are just waiting to bring you the calmness and clarity that an over-demanding schedule steals from you.” A welcome respite for anyone whose gear shift is perpetually in overdrive, Quiet Mind is an invitation to rest, find peace, awaken, and remember. It offers deceptively simple wisdom to help readers sharpen their senses and make room for life.

instant-karma.jpg   Instant Karma by Barbara Ann Kipfer.  Help others. Help yourself. Be a better person, and make the world a better place. Using the wisdom of the East to instruct and inspire, INSTANT KARMA is a universe of things a reader can do, right now, to accumulate good karma. And, like pennies going into a piggy bank, each is a seemingly little thing-but feed the bank day after day and feel it grow richer and happier.  Created by Barbara Ann Kipfer, the author whose books-including 14,000 Things to Be Happy About, 8,789 Words of Wisdom, and The Wish List-have 1.2 million copies in print, INSTANT KARMA is a compulsive, densely packed, chunky little book of 10,000 or so suggestions, wishes, thoughts, and the occasional heartening quotation.

its-up-to-you.jpg   It’s Up to You by Karen Casey.  It’s Up to You invites readers to do three simple things: meditate, pay attention, and make choices to change their lives–for a few minutes each morning and evening, one principle a week for twelve weeks. As we reflect on Casey’s insight into the insidious ways we create misery or drama, try to impose will, and suffer needlessly, and as we follow her gentle prompts to make different choices, we begin to see that we can change just about anything in our lives by taking these small steps. Nothing could be simpler, and nothing could be more effective. Or as Karen Casey puts it, “Progress is guaranteed. Perfection isn’t expected.”

easy-green-living.jpg   Easy Green Living by Renee Loux.  We are what we eat, but we also are what we use to clean our homes, pamper our skin, and decorate our rooms, according to Renée Loux, accomplished raw food chef, award-winning author, and host of Fine Living TV’s Easy Being Green. In her new book, Easy Green Living, she applies her whole-foods philosophy to home, garden, and beauty routines.  Renée Loux demonstrates that being green at home is easy, affordable, and better in every sense of the word. She discusses the daily choices we face that can keep the home, personal care, and beauty routines free of toxins. She exposes the dirt on cleaning products and common hazardous ingredients and reveals her recommendations for greener options, including her “Green Thumb Guides” for choosing non-toxic, eco-smart, and human-friendly products. Peppered with compelling and inspiring facts, Easy Green Living is full of “5 Step” lists, products and recipes for green cleaning, helpful charts, safer choices for every room, and inspirational advice so we can save the planet–one cleaning spritz at a time.
